Folks I make no claims that this yummy steak pie with filo pastry topping is all of my own recipe creation.

Nope. You see the steak pie filling part is yet again another of my families handed down recipes.

That delicious but simple to make pie filling has been made the same way by my gran and my mum and now by me.

The reason why I wanted to bring you this classic authentic steak pie recipe today, was to show you just how easy it is to "lighten" up a traditional pie recipe.

Normally when you think of the word "pie", you immediately think of a puff or shortcrust pastry topping don't you?

Like my what my turkey and leek pie is topped with?

Well those pastry toppings aren't exactly calorie friendly.

The turkey leek pie is my way of using up leftover turkey at Christmas and seeing as it's Christmas I'm happy to have puff pastry then. After all Christmas is different isn't it?

However, if I'm enjoying a steak pie at other times of the year I'll still make the original pie filling, but I'll top it with crumpled up filo pastry sheets instead of puff pastry.

Filo pastry is a much healthier choice pastry. But it still means you can enjoy that soft crunchy topping on your steak pie without having to miss out pastry altogether.

This is great if you're calorie counting but still craving your favourite foods.

I don't know about you folks but especially now with it being in the depths of winter I think it's essential to have comforting food like this steak pie, wouldn't you agree?

Is Filo Pastry Healthy?

  • Compared to other pastries filo pastry is healthier because no fat is used to make it.
  • Short pastry uses butter in it's mixture.
  • Puff pastries or more traditional flaky pie pastries can use double the amount of butter that is used in short pastry. This is necessary for the pastry to rise.
  • One sheet of filo pastry has approximately 40 calories in it.
  • One sheet of puff pastry can have up to 670 calories in it.

  • 4 sheets filo pastry

  • Cook in oven for 50m - 1 hour until the meat is tender.

  • Take each individual sheet of filo pastry and crumple it into a loose ball. Then place the 4 sheets on top of the pie dish. Spray the filo balls with the cooking oil.

  • Place the pie dish back into the oven and bake for about 15 - 20 minutes until the filo balls are lightly browned and crisp.
